WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced final rules for Unmanned Aircraft (UA), commonly known as drones. The new rules will require Remote Identification (Remote ID) of drones and allow operators of small drones to fly over people and at night under certain conditions. These rules come at a time when drones represent the fastest-growing segment in the entire transportation sector – with currently over 1.7 million drone registrations and 203,000 FAA-certificated remote pilots.

Remote ID will help mitigate risks associated with expanded drone operations, such as flights over people and at night, and both rules support technological and operational innovation and advancements.

Two days ago a local news channel reported the death by stabbing of a local woman in Carlsbad while walking/running on a tail: https://www.kusi.com/police-release-name-of-woman-stabbed-to-death-on-carlsbad-hiking-trail/

This raised many concerns and discussions from local residents about the increase of insecurity in the surrounding areas. One common observation made by many users is the recommendation of using one personal protection device such as the ones highlighted in the top of this article.

Please make sure to get yours and carry one while going out for all ages.

Take care and be safe!

Last weekend I went to beautiful Lake Hodges to enjoy a mountain bike ride in the north side of the lake, you'll find there are amazing views and relaxing sceneries, however if you get out of the dirt path, you're prone to get a flat tire, even if you are using thron-resistant tubes.

My primary backup at home has been a reliable set of two external 3TB  hardrives for a few years now, I configure them as RAID 1 and are connected on my Linux desktop setup. Everything has been working wonderful.

Now, I recently started working on a project where big data processing is required and my existing setup was found not suitable for the task.

With an increase of traffic and devices connected at home, I decided to add a WiFi extender since the signal is weaker in the 2nd story.

I found a cheap DLink DAP-1620 which by specs seemed that will do the trick. I ordered one.

After receiving it first thing I checked is the information printed in the case of the extender itself. I noted down the MAC address and added it into my router filtered list. I plugged the device to the wall AC socket and then connected to it. The setup was very simple, as per instructions. I added the Router SSID and password, configured the extender WIFI signal and rebooted the extnder.

The real time weather feature on FlightGear is broken due to noaa.gov website moving http to enforce https traffic instead.

Based on this post https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=35343#p343940 it is a known bug and seems to have been fixed in the git repo.

For those who don't want to git clone and build from source there is an simple alternative: Setup an HTTP Proxy

The following steps were executed in Linux, it shold be simple to implement on Windows or Mac:

In every software development project adhering to coding standards is a must (even if the code will be read and used by a single author). Python is not the exception, there are coding guidelines that cover all the relevant pieces, and those are all included in the Python Enhancement Proposal 8

Sometimes is hard to keep track of all those guidelines, and to help with this, a Python tool called Pylint has been developed.

This article will guide you step-by-step on how to configure Pylint in the Eclipse IDE in order to do auto-formatting and inspect your code for continuous improvement.

I've integrated my work environment around Eclipse while developing with multiple programming languages. Python is not the exception.

This time I've created a small tutorial on how to setup the Eclipse IDE to support Python, Git and Attlassian JIRA for ticket associated to code features and bugfixes.

The following instructions have been validated using the latest (at the moment of this writing) version of Eclipse Oxygen 4.7.2

UAVSI position regarding California passing SB 142. The legislation would restrict UAS from flying below 350 feet over private property.
